Itinerary for the 6 Days Marangu Route
Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Here, you will meet your guide for a detailed briefing on the climb, check your gear, and rent any necessary equipment. Spend the night in Moshi, preparing for the adventure ahead.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your journey begins at Marangu Gate (1,870 meters) after completing the registration formalities. The trek starts with a gentle hike through the lush rainforest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and other wildlife. After about 5-7 hours of hiking, covering 8 kilometers, you will arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720 meters) for your first overnight stay.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, you will continue the ascent, leaving the rainforest behind as you enter the moorland zone. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including glimpses of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The hike to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) takes about 6-8 hours, covering 12 kilometers.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
This day is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial part of the Kilimanjaro climb. You can take a short hike to the Zebra Rocks (3,980 meters) to help your body adjust to the altitude. This day helps improve your chances of reaching the summit and provides an opportunity to rest and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The trek today leads you through the alpine desert, a stark contrast to the lush vegetation of the previous days. The path is well-defined, and you will gradually ascend to Kibo Hut (4,703 meters), located at the base of the summit. The hike takes about 6-8 hours, covering 10 kilometers. You will have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the challenging summit attempt that begins around midnight.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit and Back to Horombo Hut
Your summit day starts in the early hours of the morning. With headlamps lighting the way, you will ascend through the steep scree towards Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) on the crater rim. After a brief rest, you will continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. The climb to the summit is tough and can take 6-8 hours.
After celebrating your achievement and capturing the stunning sunrise, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest. Following this, you will continue your descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) for a well-deserved rest. The total hiking time for this day is approximately 12-16 hours, covering a distance of 22 kilometers.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Departure
On the final day, you will descend through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The hike takes about 5-7 hours, covering 20 kilometers. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificates before being transferred back to Moshi. Depending on your travel plans, you will either stay overnight in Moshi or be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure.
