The trail takes you through five distinct climatic zones, each with its unique flora and fauna. Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi
Your adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, where you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Here, you will meet your guides for a detailed briefing and preparation for the climb. Any missing gear can be rented, ensuring you are fully equipped for the journey ahead.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The climb starts at Machame Gate (1,800 meters), where you will register and begin your ascent through the lush rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, but the beautiful surroundings make it worthwhile. After approximately 5-7 hours of trekking, you will reach Machame Camp (3,000 meters), where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
On the second day, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper, with rocky outcrops and stunning views of Mount Meru in the distance. After 4-6 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Shira Camp (3,840 meters), located on a plateau with spectacular panoramic views.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
The trek from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960 meters) takes you through the alpine desert. You will hike to the Lava Tower (4,630 meters) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This day’s trek is longer, taking 6-8 hours, but it helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
The fourth day starts with the challenging Barranco Wall, a steep climb that requires some scrambling. After conquering the wall, the trail continues through the alpine desert to Karanga Valley and then up to Barafu Camp (4,670 meters). This day’s trek takes 8-10 hours, and you will rest early to prepare for the summit attempt.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit and Back to Mweka Camp
Summit day begins around midnight. You will start your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) under the stars, reaching Stella Point (5,739 meters) at sunrise. The final push to the summit is challenging but incredibly rewarding. After celebrating at the peak, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,080 meters). This long day of trekking takes 12-15 hours.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final day is a short descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters), taking 3-4 hours. Here, you will receive your summit certificates and be transferred back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
Departure Day
You will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure, marking the end of your incredible 6 days Machame route Kilimanjaro climb adventure.
